My general interest in energy efficiency and generation of electric energy from renewable sources drove my decision to pursue a solar PV installation. Years ago it was not cost effective to install such system a without substantial tax or other incentives/subsidies. My first installation was therefore conservative in size and was considered a supplemental energy source. Now with the hardware cost being much lower it is a lot more cost effective to install larger setups, which I did with my second install last year.

So far both installations work without any problems and now cover my electricity needs to 100%. With the net-metering plan from my current provider I can maximize the benefit of the setups. Design and installation was fairly easy and the systems operate virtually maintenance free.

The WebConnect module of the new (larger) system allows for real-time monitoring of production via Web and mobile devices and with the Secure Power Supply (SPS) available with the SMA Sunnyboy inverters it is possible to power a certain number of devices within the home in case of power outages during day time hours. This requires a manual grid disconnect, which is part of the SPS setup.

Overall I had a very good experience with the installers and would recommend them without hesitation. They were very helpful with securing TDSP incentives besides managing design, installation and certifications.
