After getting a new roof we wanted to have a green yard and invested in a solar array. We did have a 26 month period with No electricity bills.

It just depends on how many rainy days we have. More sunny days and you build up a credit to hold you over the summer!

Green features

  • Rain water catchment:  3,500 gallon capacity. 6-550 gallon & 2-75 gallon barrels in 2 zones.
  • Aquaponic water garden.  The tower has a 20 gallon basin with a pump.  The pump will pump water and nutrients from the bottom up a 4 foot plastic pipe to a drip pan.  The water then drips into cups the plants are in.  This is the easiest gardening I have ever done!
  • Low water use landscape. 50% Buffalo grass in front yard.
  • White composition roof.

We started the cistern by trying to keep water away from pier and beam structure. We saw how easy saving water was with large trash cans. So the next step was to build the cistern. We use the cistern in the goldfish pond instead of chlorine water, in the Aquaponics water gardens and to wash the solar array.
